HIV and Hepatitis Awareness Campaign

Project Overview

The HIV and Hepatitis Awareness Campaign is one of the flagship projects of the Global Platform for Treatment Advocacy (GATA). This initiative is designed to reduce the prevalence, stigma, and misinformation surrounding HIV and Hepatitis B & C among African and minority ethnic (BME) populations in Europe and Africa.
Our goal is to ensure that these communities gain access to accurate information, testing, and treatment — empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health and contribute to the elimination of these diseases by 2030, in line with the World Health Organization (WHO) global targets.

Project Objectives

  1. Raise Awareness: Increase public knowledge of HIV and Hepatitis transmission, prevention, and treatment among targeted communities.

  2. Promote Testing and Early Diagnosis: Encourage regular screening through free or subsidized community-based testing drives.

  3. Reduce Stigma: Tackle myths, misconceptions, and discrimination against people living with HIV and Hepatitis.

  4. Improve Access to Care: Connect individuals to local health centers, treatment programs, and support services.

  5. Strengthen Partnerships: Collaborate with community organizations, healthcare providers, and policy actors to sustain long-term impact.

Target Population

  • African and minority ethnic (BME) communities in Europe and Africa.

  • Migrant populations, youth, and at-risk groups (e.g., sex workers, drug users).

  • Community leaders, religious groups, and local influencers.

  • Healthcare providers working with vulnerable populations.

Key Activities

  1. Community Sensitization and Outreach

    • Organize health awareness walks, open-air sessions, and community meetings.

    • Distribute multilingual educational materials (flyers, brochures, posters).

    • Host radio and TV talk shows featuring health professionals and community advocates.

  2. Free Testing and Counseling Campaigns

    • Partner with hospitals and clinics to conduct free or low-cost HIV and Hepatitis screening.

    • Offer confidential counseling and follow-up support for individuals who test positive.

    • Establish mobile clinics for hard-to-reach areas and migrant settlements.

  3. Capacity Building and Training

    • Train volunteers, healthcare workers, and community advocates on health communication, stigma reduction, and patient referral systems.

    • Develop culturally sensitive training manuals and digital resources.

  4. Media and Digital Awareness

    • Launch a multilingual digital campaign across social media platforms, featuring testimonies, infographics, and educational videos.

    • Create partnerships with influencers to amplify the campaign’s reach.

  5. Monitoring and Evaluation

    • Conduct pre- and post-campaign surveys to measure impact.

    • Track the number of individuals tested, trained, and referred for treatment.

    • Generate data-driven reports to guide policy advocacy and future interventions.

Expected Outcomes

  • Improved community knowledge about HIV and Hepatitis prevention and treatment.

  • Increased uptake of testing and early diagnosis in target populations.

  • Reduced stigma and improved social support for individuals living with HIV/Hepatitis.

  • Strengthened healthcare partnerships and referral systems.

  • Enhanced policy engagement and visibility for minority health issues.
